NSG 2313 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Hand Washing, Asepsis, Exudate
Document Summary
Nature of infection: entry and multiplication of an organism results in disease, colonization occurs when a microorganism invades the host but does not cause infection, communicable disease is the infectious process transmitted from one person to another. Body openings (mouth, nose, rectum, vagina, urethra, ostomies) Breaks in skin (scrape, cut or another wound) Breaks in mucous membranes (skin in mouth, eyes, nose, vagina, rectum) Organism can enter by the same route as any portal of exit. Fa(cid:272)tors that redu(cid:272)e the (cid:271)ody"s defenses enhan(cid:272)e the (cid:272)han(cid:272)es of pathogens entering the body. Resistance increased by immunizations and actual contraction of the disease. Assessment includes a thorough investigation: review of past diseases, travel history. Immunizations and vaccinations: status of defense mechanisms, patient susceptibility, age, nutritional status, stress, disease process, medical therapy, clinical appearance, laboratory data. When implementing care, consider: medical and surgical asepsis, control or elimination of infectious agents, control or elimination of reservoirs, control of portals of entry.
