Mus2382 - lecture 4: southeast asia - vietnam & indonesia. Bronze instruments in upland regions of vietnam. Bamboo instruments in southern regions of vietnam ( utes) Great diversity of cultural practices; lots of ethnic groups coexisting. Lowland comprised mostly of farmers cultivating rice. Was a chinese colony for thousands of years. Each performer has one gong that he strikes with padding beater or st of hand (changes timbre); size of gong changes pitch. Different tones being struck; but strong sense of tonal structure. No single performer playing same melodic line. Communal activity; needs high degree of coordination/attention. No one musician has melody; all participating equally. Playing same melody with different variations played. Heterophony allows different levelled performers to play together. Buddhism and christianity present but to a smaller degree. Including dutch and english due to colonization. Gamelan music featured at 1889 paris world faire. Caught the attention of composers, such as debussy, cage, reich, glass.
