Mass commercialization: starts in the 1980s with big crossover hits by artists such as run-dmc, beastie boys, salt- n-pepa and ll cool j, rap is becoming more of a mainstream thing (run dmc, beastie boys, etc. , yo! Mtv raps, a cable music channel (pre-youtube this is where you find music videos, helped bring rap to the mainstream) Mtv started in 1981, and they played no african american artists, very white washed, exceptions michael and prince. Rap show became so popular it went from once a week to everyday for an hour. This leads to pop rap, artists meant for commercialization (family friendly, etc. : new audiences (a white suburban youth) This is 1989, you have gangsta rap, message, afrocentric and now you have this, it was considered watered down rap. However some may view it similarly to old school party rap, its fun light, danceable (sterilization of rap)
