Document Summary

Life cycle nutrition: pregnancy and lactation: nutrition prior to pregnancy. Nutrition of both men and women may affect fertility. Because of this, preparation must occur before pregnancy. Manage chronic conditions: growth and development during pregnancy. Organ systems develop very rapidly after conception, therefore nutrition is very important. Within days of pregnancy, the placenta, amniotic sac, and umbilical cord develops. The placenta allows for the transfer of maternal oxygen and nutrients to the fetus, and the removal of fetal wastes to mom. Less than one week after fertilization, these cells have rapidly divided multiple times and are ready for implantation: after implantation, the placenta develops and begins to provide nourishment to the developing embryo. An embryo 5 weeks after fertilization is about 1. 25cm long: a fetus after 11 weeks of development is 4cm long. The umbilical cord and blood vessels connect the fetus with the placenta: a newborn infant after nine months of development measures close to 50cm in length.
