Nightingale understood it as a call from god to serve the sick and poor, vast majority of population were poor, no medicare, no public hc, maybe charity ward, she wanted to change it all. Too high a death rate so midwifery ward closed. She had a vision of having training schools everywhere, mentored senior nurses around the world. She tried to start nursing school in ottawa but failed because docs were against it. She didn"t teach at schools, run by others. Docs have old profession, schools of med in 5th century, long profession, but nursing is recent.
