Document Summary
Flexibility (range of motion: rom: flexibility is the ability of a joint to move freely through its full range of motion (rom). The range of motion is the full motion possible in a joint. Each joint has a rom that is normally available at a joint: to achieve exibility in a joint, the surrounding muscles must be stretched. The purpose of this is injury prevention and treatment. This is why it is bene cial to warm-up before stretching: unlike stretching muscles and tendons, over-stretching ligaments is not desirable, muscle-tendon unit (mtu): the skeletal muscles and the tendons that connect them to the bones. Often refers pain to another area of the body: active rom: stretching, no assistance. When a person moves a given body part through its possible motions, independently (ie. without external help) Demonstrates a person"s ability to voluntarily perform available motions at that joint.
