Disease burden and prevention: chronic, infectious and non-infectious diseases. Chronic: lifestyle, contaminant or biological agent related diseases, they usually last a lifetime and most are terminal. Acute: caused by a contaminant or a biological agent and may be transmitted from person to person. Infectious: caused by a biological agent and can be transmitted from person to person through contact or through an agent. Non-infectious: may be caused by a contaminant and may be chronic or acute in nature but are not transmissible from person to person. Consists of: heart and the closed system of tubes (arteries and veins) Heart: divided into 4 chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle. 2 large veins: superior vena cava, inferior vena cava. The right atrium pumps blood to the right ventricle, which contracts, propelling the blood through the pulmonary veins. As blood passes through the vascular system in the lungs, carbon dioxide is exchanged from oxygen.
