Document Summary
Small and simple so they can"t survive on their own, can"t muliply and survive on ariicial media. Always missing one half of its nucleic acid, either has dna or rna, borrows missing nucleic acid from host cell to muliply. Made of a protein coat that protects the core and carries anigens, surrounded by a nucleic acid that carries the geneic code. How do we detect viral infecions: detect the virus itself, detect the immune response (anibodies against the virus) Cell culture: cytopathic efects, hemaggluinaion, immunoluorescence: detecion of paient"s immune responses: detecion of anibodies in the paient"s blood. Anibody detecion, presence or absence (elisa): immunity test. Rise in anibody itre or high anibody itre: diagnosic test. Minimum of 2 samples collected between 2-3 days and look for diferences. Group viruses together that cause similar symptoms: respiratory viruses. Viruses found in the respiratory tract and produce diseases. Inluenza viruses, parainluenza viruses, respiratory syncyial viruses, rhinoviruses, adenoviruses, enchoviruses, coxsackie viruses, herpes viruses.
