In 424 the athenians suffered a major defeat in boetia at the battle of delium. In 422 bce athens was defeated again at the battle of amphipolis. Both brasidas (sparta) & cleon (athens) were killed at amphipolis. By this time both sides were tired & ready for peace! Aristeides, however athens could no longer force them to become allies: athe(cid:374)s agree to co(cid:373)e to sparta"s help if helots revolted, all of spartan allies agreed to sign the peace of nicias except boetians, corinth,elis & 421 bce: 421 bce athens and sparta agree to the peace of nicias. It is still a period of war: this is what we call it, they just call it the 50 years peace in history books, pleistoanax king of sparta and the athenian ambassador nicias agree to the treaty.
