West germany is created in june, 1949 at the end of the berlin blockade. Very few west germans wanted to move east. It was mostly people illegal immigrating from the soviet"s east germany to west gernmany. 2 million - 3. 5 million east germans moving west. 3. 5 million represents 20% of the east german population. West to east german immigrants moved because the liked communism to reunite with family, East to west movement was only illegal from a east german perspective. East germans would be given west german citizenship. If east germans left, their family who stayed behind would be treated poorly. Many people died or were imprisoned trying to move across the boarder. Previous networks had to be recreated to t the west/east divide. Berlin lies deep in east germany but half of it belongs to western powers. Berlin boarder is less enforced because there is different family and work ties. Over time it becomes increasingly enforced, 1961.
