One petition was nearly 800 meters long and signed by 350 000 people. The revolution in haiti really scared slave owners. Abolition begins with the ending of slavery in england 1772; illegal by 1800 in upper. British in 1833 (not in india or ceylon) When the british abolished slavery in the empire, they said that they would compensate the slave owners because they would be losing a huge investment". They paid them 20 million pounds (about billion cad today) The abolition was not a huge, generous, moral victory. Former slaves in haiti had to pay off france for their revolution, leading to long term isolation and a very poor population.
