Metamorphism: metamorphic rocks produced from pre-existing rocks. Process by which t, p, & chemical reactions alter mineral content & structure of pre-existing rock: solid phase reaction only i. e. it occurs without melting, occurs when t & p break some chemical bonds. Metamorphic rocks produced from: 1. igneous rocks 2. sedimentary rocks 3. other metamorphic rocks. All metamorphic rocks start as some other rock, so we can ask 3 questions: Controls of metamorphism process (degree) are 3 things: temperature, rock is moved from t where it was formed to a new temperature. Icrease potential for reaction: h2o, co2, enhances migration of ions. The composition of the rock is controlled by photolith (parent rock) Example 2 : at 200 c = snady limestone made of qatz and calacite - at 600c these mineral are no longer stbale together so each can exst alone but together forma new mineral ===
