Imperialism & colonialism were radically different ways of organizing space than had characterized much of human history: mini-systems precursor to organization of territory into empires and imperial systems. Small geographic areas usually organized around a economy and characterized by an exchange of labour. Based around degree to which local environment can produce sufficient resources to sustain a population. Empire: latin imperium = soverign authority, series of mini-systems, extensive territory and polity. Ruled by a single person (empress/emperor), sovereign state or centralized elite. Usually without the formal consent of the people living within borders. Implies colonization you need to have a political presence in order to control a territory. Large history of empires: ancient and modern, western and non-western, maritime and land-based, formal and informal. Notion much more influential than the nation state in history. Interface between europe, middle-east and africa: dissolves after wwi.
