We as western feminists view ourselves as fighting for (cid:498)the nation(cid:499) But most women, particularly in the global south, became involved because it was a necessity. We need to consider the variations within agency. Agency and victimhood have a very contentious relationship. The moment that independence was achieved nationally, women were often pushed back into the background (agency loss of agency/victimhood) They were used by capitalism & nationalist/patriarchal movements. Nationalist struggles are often painted with broad strokes and viewed as homogenous, but they are not monolithic. There were a lot of influences that chinese women had on indian women in different classes (in terms of research re: intimacy) Indian women in india vs. indian women in malaya. A poor chinese woman could more closely associate herself with a poor. Indian women than a poor chinese woman could associate with a rich.
