ENG 3378 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Nanny
ENG3378- Lecture – June 11, 2018
• Continuing with Their eyes were watching god
• Lastly we were talking about how Janie was giving her dream of the pear tree up and in turn
became a woman
• Distinction between dreams and womanhood
• Most experimental of the novels- human experience
• Despite taking up 15 years of her life- narrative focus upon Logan is but a drop in an ocean-
minimal
• Tea Cake on the other hand- while only a small few weeks with Janie receives a massive section
of the narrative
• What is the protection that Logan offers? Since it is not Logan specifically but rather a man like
Logan
• How is a marriage to Logan escaping the mule of the world idea that her grandmother has?
• Protection is based mostly on the size of his bank account, house, etc.- the only man in town
with a piano
• How does she consider this protection? How does this seem to be some kind of better existence
for Janie?
• One it is due to her wanting to protect her from what she went through as well as her daughter-
spare her the racial trauma
• Why is nanny happy with Logan where Janie is not – because of the cultural forces that have a
hold on nanny- she has been preprogramed by her experiences
• I o ay is Loga or Jody good husads, hoeer, Hursto does’t ant them to be seen as
bad guys
• Logan and nanny take care of a mutual deal-marriage is a deal
• Logan treats Janie as an object and nothing more- a glorified pack animal
• Just a material life with Logan- when she meets Jody she believes everything will be different
• Pg.29. he spoke of opportunity and change- ut she hags ak as she does’t thik he
represents the pear tree
• Thus hy leae Loga for Jody? Espeially if he does’t represet the flourishig of her drea
but instead represents far horizons
• Why is he more appealing than the protection?
• What is it that Jody gies if it is’t protetio ad it is’t the drea
• He is something to escape to when escaping from Logan
• She can escape at anytime from Logan – yet she waits- she waits till she meets Jody
• Jody has big plans- changing the world he lives in- has the desire to change things etc.- that is
what takes her
• Jody appears to have the growth to go further- unlike Logan who appears to be stunted- this is
once again said on pg. 46
• Jody and Logan are the same- they may not go about it the same way but Jody wants the same –
a mule- wants a parrot who listens to his big voice- and bends to his will
• Jody believes himself as God – corruption of my god – Jody’s ath phrase is I God pg. 46
• Why then would Janie run off with him then if he appears to be no better than Logan? – voice-
the idea of voice is what makes him seem to be ideal
