Picking up from last class
• What is going on in three lives
• What are the challenges being brought forward in three lives
• We need to keep in mind that stein was 30 by the time her book was being published
• This was the starting point of modernism
• It took a long time for her to find a publisher who would publish it, it took her paying for it to
really go to press
• She appeared to be uninterested in plot
• Stream of conscience, Stein disagrees with this due to needing experience
• She is not interested in causality
• Texts of unhappiness yet we are being set up to think happiness- yet we are not given causation-
no one gets happier- they end in death
Anderson, Stein, and Art
• Stein is more of an influence than a writer- more people are aware of her but when they have to
read her work hate it
• Stein has serious frustration when it comes to language- what is a rose? It’s a rose
• You can make the same about Anderson- he was more of an influence than a writer- many have
not heard of him or his works
• Many of his works weren’t hugely popular other than WO
• Tales of a small town Ohio life- overall the name itself applies boring
