Peace within italy was a long time coming (many upbringings) Wasn"t a reunited italy until the 1860"s. 1848/1849 lost wars church regains power, austria maintains control. Ancona = heavily guarded austrian fortress (in italy) Gaeto = defeat of the neapolitan government. Distinction between before her sons" deaths and after (she"s a new woman) She is just like any other mother (who"s lost loved ones in war) She (and her family) was a true italian patriot (wants italian freedom) Huge celebration with the win the war but she is grieving over her loss. She is consoled by the fast that at least she still has her other son. His letters are getting shorter and shorter. She believes her dead son is watching over her living son. That doesn"t work and both sons die.
