Document Summary

Early children"s books were meant to educate and to show the correct behaviour for a child. In victorian ages, books were meant solely for entertainment. Now, children"s books are a mixture of the two. Escapism is especially important for the child. Put the child in different situations and different cultures; in a sense, socializes the child as they learn of the world, even if it is make-believe. Creates a different perspective; practicing empathy, better at figuring out what other people are going to feel. Obviously, teaches how to read and improves cognition. Can create moral guidance: what if the parents don"t agree with the moral guidance and messages in the book, there are moral struggles, questions, etc. From the start, rowling did a good job showing how harry"s destroyed past has shaped his life and attitude. She has made him lovable instead of seeing him as a sulky pathetic teen.
