Before you read the essay, read over the exam. You will then read the essay with the exam questions in mind. Questions to keep in mind as you read: Section i (35%): three mandatory questions that will test your critical reading skills and your grasp of the principles of essay writing. You will be asked to give short paragraph answers to the following kinds of questions: 1 identify and evaluate the thesis statement for its strengths / weaknesses: identify and paraphrase the essay"s main ideas, discuss tools of persuasion used by the author. Evidence (fact or opinion): is it sufficient? relevant? etc tone: (casual, humorous, very formal). Use of language (denotation vs connotation) use of parallelism, metaphors, metacommentary etc: evaluate the structure of the essay.
