Point where narrator doesn"t tell herself something, b/c generally you won"t acknowledge that you"re lying to yourself esp. in a diary. Narrator trying to school herself to not think/criticize not completely trustworthy (to herself: structure: journal becomes ridiculous later in story; *ending of story = she"s crawling around room going crazy on her hands and knees. Speaking of structure gilman hoping readers don"t take great notice. Gilman writing about colonial house, spooky setting. *pay attention to first few lines of story = gives touchstones; map of what"s to come. Narrator throws in what she wants reader to be knowing maps out what is to come/sets up. Romantic [female - narrator; imagination; sometimes neurotic creativity (e. g. attaching personalities to furniture); likes to indulge into imagination (e. g. wants haunted house)]; unwell; sometimes neurotic; supressed/weakened by rational; put down] Hysteria: not just confined to women more associated w/ women though.
