Document Summary

Essentially, it is the thesis statement/ argument. Thesis needs to be as clearly articulated to the readers as possible. What level of education on science does the author expect it"s readers to have on the subject: is there a particular stance/ position the author holds? (usually there is). Are they arguing for a particular thing? ex: talking about marijuana laws in a particular place at a particular time: will not be trying to criticize the author"s argument!!, begin by identifying the purpose of the essay. Not everything is possible to make a claim towards. Facts can help us make a claim, however facts are not claims. Exclude matters of basic opinion or taste ex: saying a sci- movie is the best movie ever. instead say the movie is a clear example of a particular american scienti c trend. Words to qualifying a claim: pg 325: takes the burden off things.
