The story starts in berlin, germany in the 1940s (ww2). Bruno and his family move to poland for his father"s job (nazi officer) and live on the grounds of auschwitz, which is a notorious concentration camp. On the other side of the long, barbed fence is auschwitz, which bruno and gretel pronounce out-with . It is out of bounds at all times to which bruno doesn"t understand until later. Bruno sees the prisoners wearing striped uniforms to which he mistakes as pyjamas. Influence on character: upon walking along the fence, bruno finds a small boy (boy in striped pyjamas) with an armband that has the star of david which reveals he is a jew. Bruno"s friend, shmuel influences bruno to cross the fence to help him find his dad. They don"t find shmuel"s father and it is assumed he is dead. Before bruno heads home, soldiers surround him and a group of boys.
