One vehicle for acquiring an understanding of the entrepreneurial process is through the preparation of a start-up business plan. Phase 2: The Feasibility Plan â This experience begins with the creation of a feasibility plan. This will evolve into a business plan that will be a tool to assist you to put the concepts we have addressed in class in action. Resources will be provided to help you with the plan, including software that can assist you through the process. After you propose and select the type of business and begin the process of assessing its feasibility and potential, the objective is to make this a positive, obtainable, and valuable experience.

Phase 3: The Business Plan â The course is designed to provide resources to assist you throughout the development of the plan. This includes the opportunity to review previous plans. You can âapproachâ a mentor that will be an industry or subject matter expert to assist you with the planning process.

The Written Plan: The body of the written business plan should be no more than 25 pages including the executive summary and all financial statements. The business planâs financial section will include a complete set of financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow) for the initial three to five years of the venture. An assumption list will accompany the statements. Detailed spreadsheets and appendices can follow the text; however, the total plan should not exceed 30 pages.

Plans must include an explanation of the offering to investors that indicate the investment required, expected ROI, deal structure, marketing plan, operations plan, and management team description. Potential exit or company sustainability strategies also must be included.

Business Plan Presentation: Strong written and oral skills greatly facilitate success in the business world. Those individuals that can effectively communicate their ideas will have an advantage over those that cannot.

Guidance

The required tasks are detailed below:

(1) Prepare common-size balance sheets and income statements for both companies. Note: Compute for the most recent THREE years.

(2) Prepare comparative analysis (i.e., change of percentage analysis) on income statement and balance sheet for both companies. You should compute for the most recent THREE years.

(3) Prepare ratio analyses (for the same THREE year time period) for both companies. At least, you should include the following ratios in your computations: (1) current ratio, (2) acid-test ratio, (3) receivables turnover, (4) inventory turnover, (5) asset turnover, (6) profit margin on sales, (7) rate of return on assets, (8) rate of return on common stock equity, (9) earnings per share, (10) payout ratio, (11) debt to total assets ratio, (12) times interest earned, (13) cash debt coverage ratio, and (14) book value per share.

(4) Comment on the analytical results of the two companies. Your comments should concentrate on the trends across the companies. In addition to contrasting the ratios between the companies, you should interpret the numbers and make suggestions as to why the ratio of one company might be higher/lower than the other.

(5) Write a conclusive summary on the firms you have studied. Based upon your conclusions, recommend the better performing firm for potential investment. Your conclusions should be based upon, and specifically reference, the analyses prepared in this report.

(6) Read sample project to get some ideas.

Report Format Requirements:

A. Report body requirements:

Cover page. List the title of the project, your names, and semester/year.

Abstract or Executive Summary. This is a separate page. It should cover the purpose of the project, the major findings, and the conclusions/recommendations, in summary form.

Table of Contents.

Main body. Use the following sequence for report content:

Introduction to the two companies and to the purpose of the report

Analytical section. This should include all your numerical analyses. This is where you will discuss the results of, comments on, and conclusions about the vertical and horizontal common-size statements, comparative analysis (i.e., change of percentage analysis), and the ratio analyses for both companies.

Comparisons of companies and all other analysis (observations and/or interpretations). (You may combine b and c if you wish, as long as both are well covered.)

Conclusions and recommendation for investment.

References. List all major reference sources.

Appendices. Include tables and graphs of your numerical analyses. For reference convenience, assign a title to each separate item, such as Table 1, Exhibit 1, etc.

B. Typesetting requirements:

Use size 12 font. Times New Roman is preferred.

Double space between lines.

Number pages in accordance with the APA style guide.

One inch on all sides.

Do not right justify text. Use left justify.

Minimum length: 8 pages. (Note: You can easily meet the minimum length requirement since you will have a lot of tables in the paper.)

The submitted work should be in ONE file with a word or pdf format. An Excel spreadsheet file is NOT acceptable.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Evidence of plagiarism will result in a grade of âFâ to the course and be subject to appropriate disciplines.

NOTES:

A portion of your grade will be assessed based on the overall report quality, clarity, format, and cohesiveness.

A FREE RIDER in the group will not be tolerated. However, to report an alleged free rider, you should send me a formal written complaint. You should carefully manage your group over the semester to ensure that no teammate will take the chance of turning into a free rider. Try to contact/manage your teammates frequently and inform me if any member is not willing to participate the group work so we can address this issue ASAP. A free rider will receive his/her group project grades solely based on what he/she has contributed to the projects. If there is a free-rider in your group or a member drops the class, the rest of the group members are still expected to submit a COMPLETE paper.

Trump Pump Company (FIN5303-01; Spring 2017)

Although you were hired as a financial analyst after completing your MBA, your first assignment at Trump Pump is with the firmâs marketing department. Part of the âMake Great Pumps Even Greater Againâ campaign includes your boss lending you to the marketing department to help them develop some analytical procedures that the sales force can use to demonstrate the financial benefits of buying Trump Pumpâs products. Trump pumps cost more because they use no parts from Mexico. To offset the price, each pump comes a coupon for a free tax credit on the next purchase from Trump Pump, a round of golf a Mar a Lago and a 14 ct. gold leaf âTrumpâ logo sticker for the front office door.

Trump Pump manufactures pump systems that are used in a wide variety of applications including water distribution, sewage treatment, petroleum refining, and pipeline transmission. The complete systems include sophisticated pumps, sensors, valves, and control units that continuously monitor the flow rate and the pressure along a line and automatically adjust the pump to meet pre-set pressure specifications. Most of Trump Pumpâs systems are made up of standard components, and most complete systems are priced from $600,000 to $1,000,000. Because of the technical nature of the products, the majority of Trump Pumpâs salespeople have a background in engineering, not finance and marketing.

As you think about this assignment, you quickly come to the conclusion that the best way to âsellâ a system to a cost-conscious customer is to conduct a capital budgeting analysis to demonstrate the cost effectiveness of the system. Further, you conclude that the best way to begin is with an analysis for one of Trump Pumpâs actual customers.

From discussions with the firmâs salespeople, you determine that a proposed sale to the Oklahoma City Water Department is perfect to use as an illustration. OKC Water is considering the purchase of one of Trump Pumpâs standard water pump systems which costs $850,000, including delivery. It will cost OKC Water another $8,000 transportation and $40,000 to install the equipment. This expense (transportation and installation) will be added to the price of the equipment to determine the depreciable basis of the system. Also, the new pump will require an increase in working capital of $35,000. OKC Water will depreciate the pump system to zero using straight-line method for six years. They plan to sell the system at the end of nine years for $450,000. After the first year, OKC Water will be required to pay $11,000 per year for a service and maintenance contract with payments at the beginning of each year.

The system from Trump Pump would replace a pump that OKC Water is now using. That pump has been depreciated to a book value of zero but will be sold for $70,000 if the new system is purchased. OKC Water recently spent $70,000 just one year ago to upgrade their existing pump system. (OKC Water believes the $55, 000 for repairs should be a cost to the present evaluation because it did not increase the salvage value of their current pump.) By replacing the old pump, OKC Water should save $380,000 annually in pre-tax operating costs. OKC Water estimates that its cost of capital is 12% and its tax rate is 34%. If purchased, the new pump will be housed in a building owned by OKC Water and currently leased to a fishing guide service which pays OKC Pump $26,000 at the beginning of each year to use the building. Because of the noise, the fishing guide service will have to move out of the building.

After developing a capital budgeting analysis for the pump system, write a description of the analysis to be used by Trump Pump sales representatives to help sell the system to OKC Water. Remember that the analysis will be used to help non-finance sales representatives sell equipment to non-finance customers. The analysis must be understandable and clear. Show each step and calculation such that an intelligent person not trained in finance can understand. Also, include a spreadsheet that calculates your results (template included). Calculate Payback Period, Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return, Profitability Index, and Modified Internal Rate of Return.
