Reel cops or real cops: rivalry mass-mediated police exercise greater influence in society than real cops do, occupational role strain. Police officers have to take on more responsibilities because of the strain placed on them: diminishing public confidence. Expecting magic": civilian second-guessing police no longer lone expert, unrealistic expectations. Part of this means managing public expectations about what police do. The new focus is on communication: garnering information. They can learn crucial things from the public like solving crime and helping people: avoid confrontation. In informing the public, they can make people think that they are part of the process.
