Individuals are given a survey and asked to reveal what crimes they have personally committed whether or not they have been caught. The group that is usually interviewed tends to be younger/high school students. What is the new type of youth deviance that has recently been uncovered by self-report surveys: crimes on the internet, this can be something like harassment, downloading music/movies, underage viewing of pornography. Sr: people can exaggerate or minimize their crimes on self-report surveys. Sr: it doesn"t address very serious types of offences (rape, murder) because it is believed that individuals won"t be willing to admit to these things. Sr: the questions focuses on individuals, but many of them are committing crimes with their peers. Both: the researcher themselves may bring biases into the study. Both: people may not remember their crimes or what happened to them. Vs: some don"t believe themselves to have been a victim of a crime.
