Document Summary
The birth of public police a historical review. It used to be private, then after the industrial revolution, became public. The frankpledge system: very early model of policing. Created by king alfred (872-901) instituted the frankpledge system. Basically meant that you are responsible to your neighbour. You watch over each others safety, possessions, children etc. Any man between the ages of 15 and 60 were required to maintain order under the principle of hue and cry. This means that if you see anyone steal anything or try and break in or anything you would cry out. A group of around 10 households called tything headed by a tythingman. They would watch and even have a night watch each night. The laws they enforced depended on the norms and customs of their village. As the villages grew so did the tything which turned into the hundred headed by the hundredman. Hundreds were combined to form shires (sounds like sheriff).
