CRM 2306 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Anger Management, Risk Assessment, Managerialism
Document Summary
Medical model of imprisonment offenders are sick, rehabilitate to fix and then reintegrate into community. People going back to prison is really common so clearly something is not working. Merton looked at all the research done on recidivism (prison turn over rate) over time to see if rehabilitation work. He concluded that no it didn"t work since recidivism rates were really high. There are different security levels which are minimum, medium and maximum security. When it is over two years of incarceration you go to federal prison. Your level will depend on your past, your crime, if you"ve ever tried to escape, etc. When it is time for parole you will cascade down the system ending with the minimum security prison. Correctional centres (people sentenced to short sentences (60 days), people waiting court date, etc) Jails/detention centres (pretty much like maximum security systems)
