Document Summary

Status frustration theory is a concept developed by albert cohen. It is used to explain working-class male delinquency as being a reaction formation towards middle-class values of success. Lower-class boys have a great deal of hardship in living up to the middle-class boys, which is known as the middle-class measuring rod. Working-class parents may be working very diligently for their children, however children don t understand how hard their parents are working for them. Therefore, some children may not see their parents as hardworking due to their living situation or whatever the problem may be. Studies show that people tend to be in relationships with people similar to themselves. As a result of status frustration, lower-class kids tend to become peers with other lower-class kids who have similar experiences. Together they form to create a set of oppositional standards so that they are able to succeed like the middle-class population, which is termed reaction formation.
