Sykes is trying to explain that the deprivations why subcultures emerges and takes the forms the forms that it does in the prison. Importation model is something that inmate society is shaped by external forces. What theorists typically explicitly say: norms and values of perpetrator = norms and values of prisoner, values favouring criminality. Irwin & cressy in 1962 in a direct response to sykes because they say it"s flawed when trying to explain a prisoner"s subculture. Sykes over looks the fact that they"re going to be socialized that dictates what their values are. These guys are looking to get ahead and not more bearable (the ends justify the means): legitimate subculture - accidental prisoners are people who are convicted of a crime and they didn"t mean to commit it. Typically, these are lower- class individuals with lower-class values. Most successfully to be reintegrated into society - they"re going to resist being prisonized.
