Goodness and evil are attributed to the divine. A discourse of ideas replaces supernatural explanations. Focus on the scientific method, observation, and experimentation. Based on a collection of observable facts. The presumed cause comes before the presumed effect. The cause and the effect are correlated. The correlation between the cause and effect should not be spurious. Behaviour is determined no free will, internal/external factors that cause the individual to commit crime. When confronting situations, there is no choice. Factors are beyond the control of the individual. Ex. poor people have no choice but to steal. Constrained free will people will have choices but they will be limited. Ex. poor people are in a bad situation with limited resources but they still decided whether to steal or not. There is something about the person that makes them commit crimes (biologically, psychologically, socially) Classical school did not locate causes of crime. Concentrated population of criminals that could be used to test treatments.
