Document Summary

The use of architecture as a form of punishment. Architecture as punishment: panopticon (bentham) - never actually built, only planned. Thought to contribute to punishment in 3 ways: Always feel like you"re being watched (central guard tower) slightly tinted windows (could/couldn"t be a guard watching you); there is a threat-like feeling when you are being watched guard surveillance. Prisoner surveillance; prisoners looking at one another from one side to the next. Small cells; bentham envisioned that prisoners would be separated and isolated in separate cells along the panopticon (isolated from social interaction) Very restricted in view; peripheral vision was restricted based on your cell"s location that restriction was thought to change the experience in the prison. All would contribute to the punishment experienced- isolation, restriction, constant surveillance. Carleton county goal: built in 1862 by henry horsey. Ottawa was a logging town; lots of ruff people and filled up jails quickly.
