The government has some level of control over things like: how the drugs are regulated, how they are advertised, who they are sold to, etc. (alcohol, tobacco, prescription medication, etc. ) Criminal law has been used to prohibit the possession, production, transfer, import or export of other drugs. Some of the drugs that fall into this categories: heroin, cocaine, marijuana, lsd, ecstasy. The prohibition of these is done through the controlled drugs and substances act (cdsa). Canada has been using criminal law for prohibition purposes since the early 1900s. 1908: opium (the canadian government made the opium act. 1911, they made it into a prison sentence for possessing opium. ) In the early 1900s chinese immigrants were moving into british columbia to work on the gold rush. They were seen as a threat against the canadians because they were being replaced since the chinese were willing to work for less. In 1996 the controlled drugs and substances act (cdsa) was passed.
