Document Summary

A correlate can be defined as any variable that is related to another variable. It doesn"t say how things are related, just points it out. Correlates of crime therefore, are any variables that are associated with criminal activity. There are two types of relationships between the two variables: Positive relationship: this means that as one variable increases the other variable also increases: negative relationship: this means that as one variable increases the other variable decreases. A causal explanation refers to the interference that a change in one variable results from or is produced by a change in another variable. When attempting to prove causation, researchers must establish: a correlation between the two variables, a theory linking the variables together. Knowing the correlates of crime will help to understand the theories we will discuss in the second part of the course. It is important to understand that there are multiple causes of crime.
