People act toward the human and nonhuman objects in their lives according to the meanings that those objects have for them. The meaning of those objects for each individual emerges from interactions between him and her and other people = social transactions . The meanings of objects change depending on the situatation and context: meaning = reality + individual interpretation in context. Focuses on transactions between humans who assign meanings to objects. Focuses on the endpoints of these transactions. They try to identify key components of transactions. Analysis of how these things work rather than building a theory itself. Very micro focuses on interpretive meaning people assign to institutions and object, and the process of modifying these meanings. Micro and (critical) consensualist theory (sometimes straddling the conflict line) Deviance is not a quality of the act but of the label that others attach to the act.
