CMN 2132 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Paralanguage, Nasal Voice, Extraversion And Introversion
Document Summary
Vocalics: anything that is added on to words. People associate accents with one"s socioeconomic status (we form an impression of the person based on paralanguage -> we judge people with that) Ex: lowering pitch at the end of a conversation, speech rate. Emphasis put on words changes the meaning of something. Speech rate is faster and words are shorter (emphatic) Erratic behaviour serves to distract himself (avoidance behaviour) Corner of lips don"t lift highly enough looks away to assess the situation and process everything. Eye contact would make him more vulnerable than he is now. Component of meta-communications concerned with how something is said. People use it multiple times per day sometimes without being aware of it. We understand the non-lexical features of speech before we even know word definitions and usages. Includes both the intentional and unintentional meaning behind words. Tone is more important than gestures when ascertaining how one feels about something spoken -> mehrabian.
