CMN 2101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Statistical Inference, Vehicle Insurance, Focus Group
Document Summary
Lecture #1: overview of the research process: what is the difference between empirical and theoretical, empirical world: dealing with research dealing with problems that you are seeking to gain knowledge about, empirical knowledge: evidence based research. We are trying to get what is available to our senses (qualitative and quantitative measure): focus group = quantitative research method, gain insight in some phenomenon. In qualitative you are trying to take the measure of something (taking verbal cues, measuring compatibility on a first date: quantitative research: thinking of terms of statistics (gain inferences). Inferential statistics: they are meant to draw inferences, enable you to draw inferences as a general point. Draw an inference taking a piece of info and jump to conclusions. Inferential statistics make us infer from the sample to the population. Inferential statistics: causal relationships, variable in research represents something, concepts are non absolut.
