Involved in constructing an image/ frame of the world around us. Journalism is not a mirror of society. These notions are being challenged by digital media. Transplant period: monthly newspapers funded by the crown, produced information government was trying to e to the people (for colonialists), and letters to the paper. Industrialization: printing presses become steam operation = greater quantities sold for cheaper. Immigration: news papers were used to learning to speak english/ french. Joseph howe case: crucial to the canadian context because he accused the lieutenant general as being corrupt (as a journalist), the judge ordered the jury to find him guilty of libel, the jury found him innocent. Watershed because it set the precedent for journalistic freedom. Dawn of yellow journalism: introduction of tabloid press. Up until the vietnam war, the role of journalism was to be a watchdog of government. 1980"s: rise of commentary and opinion instead of news.
