Lecture 5 — pg. 8
• Apollodorus — “the library” (bibliothēkē — bibliotheca) of Greek Mythology = “the
collection”
• Main source for the story of Perseus, and Heracles
• We should know what this is
• Apollodorus = Gift of Apollo
• Not to be confused with Apollonius of Rhodes (poet, the author of Jason
and the Argonauts)
• Hero is a human, who is capable of certain mythical and god-like abilities — but is
also capable of dying, unlike a God
• Heroes are typically the offspring of the Gods
• The age of heroes begins when Zeus and others started to go to Earth and father
their children (typically non-consensual)
• Heroes are typically warriors, not always, but almost always an achiever of some
kind
Examples of none violent heroes:
• Triptolemus, who gave us agriculture from Demeter
• Asklepios, who gave us medicine
• Aristaeus, son of Apollo who learned Bee keeping and cheese making
Hero’s Journey — Aetiology/Etiology
(1) The hero is a son of Zeus or some other God
(2) Adventure is a coming-of-age tale (18 years old)
(3) Must destroy a monster, whose removal will aid humanity in some way
(4) Heroes patron deity is usually Athena
(5) The hero receives supernatural weapons/tools to aid their quest
(6) The monster lives at the end of the world
