Document Summary
Biotechnologists use their scientific knowledge of plants, animals, cells, biochemistry and genetics to search for answers to problems and create new substances. Biotechnologists may work in areas such as the environment, medicine, industries or agriculture. In the environmental areas, biotechnologists develop plants and microorganisms to clean polluted water or areas, create environmentally friendly products for industry use and produce renewable sources of energy such as biodiesel (ncs). In the medicinal areas, biotechnologists study genetics, viruses, plants, proteins find cures for diseases such as cancer, produce medicine using genetic modifications, and create vaccines to treat the causes of a disease. In the industrial areas, biotechnologists develop crops that are resistant to pests, create detergents for textiles and produce enzymes used in manufacturing. Biotechnologists usually work around 35 to 40 hours a week. This can be because of the continuous monitoring required in labs for research.
