BPS 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Innate Immune System, Defensin, Immune System
Document Summary
We all get sick: you develop immunity after illness. Incidence of colds decrease with age: we only get a disease once. We are always covered in bacteria and they will eat you if you give them the chance: vaccines create a fake illness, generate immunity without sickness. Immune system defends us, without a defense the microbes win: when we make a vaccine we manipulate immune system this is how we skip the sick part and just obtain immunity, weapons of the immune system include: Immobilize invaders: selectively destroy invaders, macrophages, specialized cells to eat foreign cell, specialized cells to kill infected cells. Innate immune system provides an immediate response: non-specific reaction. Immediate maximum response: cold symptoms caused by innate immune system (sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes) Adaptive immune system is selective (one we"re interested in) 2 to 3 days: response is selective and very effective. Immune system retains a memory of the infection.
