BPS 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Immunotherapy, Chlorphenamine, Mast Cell
Document Summary
Allergy rewuires prior exposure: involves immune system memory, hypersensitivity on 1st exposure, unknown previous exposure. Mast cel display ige antibodies: allergen contacts te ige molecules, antibody can send a chemical signal to the inside of the amss cell, mast cell degranulation releases histamine, cell is dying, histamine produces the allergy symptoms. Managing allergy: avoidance, antihistamines, decongestants, immune modulators, immunotherapy. Allergy tests look for reactions: inject different amount of immunogenic materials and lay it out on your back and look for an immune reaction, are able to se what your allergic to based on where the reaction occurs. First generation antihistamines can enter the brain: which is why there are side effects, when antihistamine is in the body it relives the allergy symptoms, when it is in your brain you get the side effects. Loratadine s a second generation antihistamine: does not enter brain, no sleepy, in claritin, body converts loratadine to desloratadine. Seldane contained terfenadine: first non-drowsy antihistamine (1985)
