Document Summary

Lecture 2 - cell structure, membranes and homeostasis: physiology is the science of how the body works. It helps you realize that body functions are integrated. Physical activity (pa) is defined as a complex set of behaviours that encompass any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that result in energy expenditure. Exercise is a form of physical activity that is planned, structured and done to improve at least one aspect of physical fitness (i. e. strength, flexibility or aerobic endurance). Levels of organisation: chemical, cellular, tissue, organs, systems, organism. Atoms, biomolecules, macromolecules: nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids. Cell: the functional and structural unit of life. Microscopic structures in a cell that carry out its individual functions are called organelles: basic and specialized functions. A stem cell is essentially a blank cell, capable of becoming another more differentiated cell type in the body, such as a skin cell, a muscle cell, or a nerve cell.
