ANT 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Pertussis, Jared Diamond, Lactational Amenorrhea
Document Summary
Increased dependence on food production correlated with population increase. Higher rates of fertility (mothers having more children) Factors include: prolonged breastfeeding (prevents ovulation), social choice, social customs (multiple marriages, husband and wife not having sex), infanticide/adoption. Only have 4-5 children at most in mothers lifetime. As long as they keep producing food, can have children every 1-3 years (food-producers). Jared diamond- the neolithic was the biggest mistake humanity ever made. Must put limits on population growth or find new sources of food. Population increased when lots of rain, crops grew well, weather conditions were favorable. Increases in tooth decay, bone deformities (iron deficiency in diet), stunted growth. Smallpox- cattle (cowpox), or other livestock with related pox viruses. Food foragers didn t keep a lot of domesticated animals. Not a lot of diseases travelled from dogs (most common animal to have) Hunting/gathering -> pastoralism -> horticulture -> agriculture -> urbanization/industrial production (worse to better)- wrong headed, alternate choices.
