As you go down the organization the work becomes more specialized. Profitability depends on how we divide the product. Specialization - kind of product, geographic region and activity. Relative to the president the level of work is more specialized. The level below is more specialized than the level above. The pressure points are where we need coordination. Span of control: the number of direct reports of a given manager. The number of subordinates working directly under a manager. Specification of span of control significantly determines the number of levels in the hierarchy. The narrower the span of control, the more managers and hierarchical levels you need. The larger the organization the greater the value of work for an individual.
