We don"t want to say that you must have a full education to make medical decisions but there are also some people whose ability to make medical decisions is compromised. In a general sense, is an individual"s ability to perform a specific task. In a biomedical sense, requires a rational and mature person to be free from internal or external constraints that might prevent person from understanding the situation and be able to make a decision that reflects their long-term values. Perform a task = make a competent decision with regards to medical care. This makes sense on paper but each of these factors can be questioned. Generally, by 18 we are considered mature but there are people over 18 who are not and people under 18 who are. Respecting choice of someone who is able to express a preference. Choice must be reasonable what a reasonable person would do.
