HLSC 3464U Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Fine-Needle Aspiration, Biopsy, Immunohistochemistry
Document Summary
Biopsy: shave biopsy, incisional biopsy, and excisional biopsy. Cytology: smears, fine needle aspiration, imprint. Skin lesions are removed and sent to a pathologist. Shave biopsy usually done with a razor blade minimal damage to the skin, shave off a small fragment, leaving the skin relatively flat, high skilled individuals will perform this task. Punch biopsy circular blade that is used to punch out a section of lesion, causes minimal bleeding, individual does not need any stitches, can be done on the facial area. Incisional biopsy same as the punch biopsy except it protrudes down using a scalpel, used for deep tissue. Excisional biopsy entire lesion or tumour covers more of the skin, ideal for small melanomas, ideal if the lesion is small enough, no further damage to the skin. Smear cells and tissues smeared on a glass stain that is looked at under a microscope: usually not painful.
