Paul bernardo was a student at u of t in 1990 when he met homolka and this is when he started raping young women. He was interviewed by police and gave dna but the police wrote him off as he was too charming . He committed 19 rapes in 1990 and was dubbed the scarborough rapist. In 1991 he married homolka and moved to st. catherine"s. He continued his attacks in st catherine"s and they escalated. Bernardo raped, tortured and killed homolka"s younger sister. Mahaffy- brutally tortured and sexually assaulted her in their home. Kristen french then tortured and sexually assaulted her for two weeks. In 1992, paul started taking out his anger on homolka who went to the hospital. The doctor who examined her declared it the worst domestic abuse he had seen in 15 years. It was 3 years later that the dna was examined and they ended up arresting bernardo.
