Three stages of stress
oStress can lead to physical stages
oStage one is called mobilizing energy
oDirect result of a release of adrenaline into bloodstream. Your heartbeat
may also increase. There physical responses can occur as the result of
good or bad events
oThe second stage deals with consuming energy stored in your body
oThe human body actually releases stored energy in the form of fats and
sugars
oThis can lead to a burst in energy, or even anxiety and a possible decline
in your autoimmune system
oThe last stage is called draining energy store
oCan result in negative effects like insomnia and chronic fatigue. These
stressors may diminish the further the victim moves away
General adaptation syndrome (3 stages) chapter 13
o1: Fight or flight response
o2: Resistance
o3: Exhaustion
PTSD
oCaused by repeated exposure to stressful situations
oCan be criminal victimization, or experience by soldiers, and first responders
oRelive their experience and are left to deal with high levels of anxiety and
depression
oCounselling may help but the victim must avail themselves to such assistance
Trauma disorder
oNew diagnosis
oRelates specifically to children and how they experience or witness repeated
trauma and victimization of others
oBecause they are children their cognitive abilities are different from adults
oThis term also applies to children who are direct victims of crime
oChildren may display a wide array of emotional responses such as fear, anger, and
shame and helplessness
