Two major theorists: carl rogers and abraham maslow. Humanism emphasises uniqueness, human freedom and growth. Human freedom means we can change accordingly to our life direction. In roger"s theory, self-actualisation is innate and a child receives condition or unconditional positive affect; therapy is needed for incongruence. Conditional/unconditional positive effect: positive emotion, all people like children receive both unconditional (who they are) get a positive effect. Conditional, they must do something first to receive positive effect. I love you for who you are vs. i"ll be happy if you go to law school . In maslow"s theory, humans strive to satisfy a hierarchy of needs (emphasise on growth) The most powerful needs are physiological needs like hunger and thirst (bottom) Safety needs are desires to have shelter and to be free from harm (survival, stability and security) Belongingness needs are desire to have friends and to feel accepted (love and affiliation) Esteem needs are desires for recognition through one"s achievements.
