WHAT IS SOCIAL SUPPORT?
INFORMAL SUPPORT: FAMILY
¡55% of Canadians reported that they felt close to at least five family members,
including those living within and outside their home (Statistics Canada, 2013).
¡Another 23% were close with three or four relatives, 17% with one or two
relatives, and 4% reported having no close relatives (Statistics Canada, 2013).
INFORMAL SUPPORT: FRIENDS
¡Along with family, Canadians often turn to close friends in times of need (Statistics
Canada, 2013).
¡In general, people had about as many close friends as close relatives (Statistics
Canada, 2013).
¡Half of all Canadians (51%) said they had five or more close friends, with very few
(6%) saying they had none (Statistics Canada, 2013).
